Ault was born in Watertown (Jefferson County), New York on September 15, 1844. He enlisted in the 35th New York Infantry on May 9, 1861 at Sackets Harbor, New York. Ault was mustered on June 11, 1861 and served about 22 months. He was discharged on April 6, 1863 at Falmouth Station, Viriginia.

Ault re-entered the Union Army on September 2, 1863 as a member of Company I of the 20th New York Cavalry. He was mustered on September 17, 1863 and about 22 months. During his tour, he was promoted to sergeant and to first sergeant on November 15, 1864. Ault was discharged on July 31, 1865 at Manchester, Virginia.

He died on January 4, 1930 at the age of 85 years. He is buried in the Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln (Lancaster County), Nebraska.
