Private Joseph T Banta
Company D, 138th Illinois Infantry (100 days, 1864)
Banta was born in Iowa in September of 1847. He was residing in Oquawka (Henderson County), Illinois when he enlisted in the regiment on May 16, 1864. He was mustered on June 21, 1864. He served about 4 months and was mustered out on October 14, 1864 at Springfield, Illinois.
The 138th Illinois Infantry was organized at Camp Wood, Illinois on June 21, 1864 for 100 days of service. The regiment was sent to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and remained there until October 1864. Company F was deployed at Weston, Missouri until August 3, 1864.
Banta died on April 12, 1933 at the age of 85 years. He is buried in the Greenwood Cemetery in Hansen (Adams County), Nebraska. Banta was a member of the Strickland Post (#13) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Hastings, Nebraska.
