Wood was born at Mount Vernon (Knox County), Ohio on August 29, 1848. He enlisted as a 16-year old private on September 10, 1864. Wood was mustered on September 27, 1864 and served 9 months with the regiment. He was mustered out June 17, 1865.
The 179th Ohio Infantry was organized and mustered on September 29, 1864 at Camp Denison, Ohio. The unit was engaged in post and garrison duty at Nashville, Tennessee from October, 1864 to June, 1865. The regiment fought at the Battle of Nashville on December 15-16, 1864.
Wood died on September 6, 1944 at the age of 96 years. He is buried in the Tekamah Cemetery in Tekamah (Burt County), Nebraska. At the time of his death, he was the last member of the Boomer Post (#118) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Tekamah.
