Baartz was born in Germany on February 25, 1844. He was residing in Brawby (Bureau County), Illinois when he enlisted and was mustered on September 8, 1864. Baartz served about 10 months. He was discharged on July 8, 1865.
The 146th Illinois Infantry was organized and mustered at Camp Butler, Illinois for 1 year on September 18, 1864. The unit was assigned to Illinois and provided guard duty.
Baartz died on January 29, 1930 at the age of 85 years. He is buried in the Grand Island Cemetery in Grand Island (Hall County), Nebraska. Baartz was a member of the Lyon Post (#11) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Grand Island.
