Beard was born in Harrison County, Indiana on December 28, 1836. He was residing in Harrison County when he enlisted and was mustered in the August 22, 1861. Beard’s date of discharge was not available in Indiana Civil War records.

The 45th Indiana Infantry (consisting of 6 companies) was organized at Madison, Indiana on August 22, 1861. The unit was designated as the 3rd Indiana Cavalry on October 22, 1861 and assigned to the Army of the Potomac in the Eastern Theatre of the Civil War.

Beard died on October 24, 1932 at the age of 95 years. He is buried in the Kimball Cemetery in Kimball (Kimball County), Nebraska. Beard was a member of the Dayton Post (#321) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Alliance, Nebraska.
