Benson was born in New York City on September 28, 1841. He enlisted in the regiment on May 2, 1861 at Binghamton, New York. Benson was mustered on May 21, 1861 and served about 2 years. He was discharged on May 31, 1863 at Elmira, New York.

Battle of Malvern Hill (VA) (July 1, 1862).
Battle of Antietam (VA) (September 16-17, 1862).
Battle of Fredericksburg (VA) (May 3-4, 1863).
Benson died on September 4, 1930 at the age of 88 years. He is buried in the Greenwood Cemetery in York (York County), Nebraska.
