Blue was born in June of 1847. He enlisted in the 26th New Jersey Infantry on September 3, 1862. He was mustered on September 18, 1862 and went on to serve about 9 months. He was discharged on June 27, 1863 at Trenton, New Jersey. Based on his date of birth, Blue was 15 years old when he enlisted.

He re-entered the Union Army as a member of Battery B of the 1st New Jersey Light Artillery. He enlisted and was mustered in on August 10, 1864. Blue served 8 months before being discharged on June 16, 1865 at Trenton.

Blue died on November 24, 1931 at the age of 84 years. He is buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Gibbon (Buffalo County), Nebraska.
