Corporal Cyrus P Byerly
Company A, 37th Illinois Infantry
Byerly was born in Pennsylvania on November 7, 1841. He enlisted in the regiment on August 14, 1861 as a private. Byerly was mustered on September 18, 1861 and went on to serve nearly 56 months. He was promoted to corporal during his enlistment and re-enlisted on February 10, 1864. Byerly was discharged at Houston, Texas on May 15, 1866.
The 37th Illinois Infantry was organized and mustered at Chicago on September 18, 1861. During Byerly’s enlistment, the regiment fought at several major battles and military operations. Some of them include:
Battle of Pea Ridge (AK) (March 6-8, 1862). Regimental losses were 20 killed and 2 wounded.
Battle of Prairie Grove (AK) (December 7, 1862).
Siege of Vicksburg (MS) (June 14-July 4, 1863).
Byerly died on May 4, 1937 at the age of 95 years. He is buried in the Prospect Hill Cemetery in Norfolk (Madison County), Nebraska. He was a member of the Matthewson Post (#109) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Norfolk.
