Brewer was born in Tippecanoe County, Indiana on July 23, 1844. He enlisted and was mustered in the regiment on August 2, 1862. He served nearly 3 years before being discharged on July 24, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee.
The 72nd Indiana Infantry was organized at Lafayette, Indiana and moved to Indianapolis on August 11, 1862. The unit was mustered on August 16, 1862. During his enlistment, the regiment was involved in several major battles and operations. Some of them include:
Capture of Chattanooga (TN) (September 9, 1863).
Battle of Chickamauga (TN) (September 19-21, 1863).
Atlanta (GA) Campaign (May-September 1864).
Battle of Resaca (GA) (May 14-15, 1864).
Siege of Atlanta (GA) (August 1-25, 1864).
Operations against General Hood (AL/GA) (September 29-November 3, 1864).
Brewer died on January 24, 1937 at the age of 92 years. He is buried in the East Park Cemetery in Ainsworth (Brown County), Nebraska.
