Company B, 16th New York Heavy Artillery
Compton was born on August 30, 1846. He enlisted in the regiment on January 2, 1864. He served about 1 year 8 months before being discharged on August 21, 1865.
The 16th New York Heavy Artillery was organized and mustered at Riker’s Island, New York on December 16, 1863. During Compton’s enlistment the unit was involved in siege operations against Petersburg and Richmond, Virginia between July 1864 to January 1865. In addition, the regiment was part of the capture of Wilmington NC on February 22, 1865.
He died on March 3, 1936 at the age of 89 years. He is buried in the Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln (Lancaster County), Nebraska. Compton was a member of the Farragut Post (#25) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Lincoln.
