Conklin was born in Sardis (Monroe County), Ohio on March 8, 1839. He enlisted in the regiment on August 24, 1861. Conklin was mustered on August 27, 1861 and went on to serve over 3 years. He was discharged on October 10, 1864.
The 33rd Ohio Infantry was organized at Portsmouth, Ohio between August 5 and September 13, 1861. During Conklin’s enlistment, the unit was involved in several major battles and operations. Some of them include:
Battle of Perryville (KY) (October 8, 1862). Regimental losses were 25 killed and 9 wounded.
Battle of Stone’s River (TN) (December 30, 1862-January 3, 1863).
Battle of Chickamauga (GA) (September 19-21, 1863). Reginental losses were 10 killed, 7 wounded, and 46 captured.
Atlanta (GA) Campaign (May 1-Setpember 8, 1864).
Battle of Resaca (GA) (May 14-15, 1864). Regimental losses were 18 killed and 10 wounded.
Battle of Peach Tree Creek (GA) (July 19-20, 1864).
Siege of Atlanta (GA) (July 22-August 25, 1864).
Conklin died on December 29, 1932 at the age of 93 years. He is buried in the Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln (Lancaster County), Nebraska. Conklin was a member of the Farragut Post (#25) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Lincoln.
