Private Lewis W Cooley

Cooley was born in New York on June 16, 1847. He enlisted and was mustered in the regiment on August 26, 1864 at Baldwin, New York. Cooley was 17 years old when he enlisted. Cooley served 9 months before being discharged on June 1, 1865 at Washington DC.
During Cooley’s enlistment, the regiment was assigned to the Siege of Petersburg (VA) (June 16, 1864-April 2, 1865). The unit was at the Appomattox Court House (VA) when General Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia.
Cooley died on January 15, 1933 at the age of 85 years. He is buried in the Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln (Lancaster County), Nebraska. Cooley was a member of the Farragut Post (#25) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Lincoln.
