Crawford was born in New York on June 12, 1842. He enlisted and was mustered in the regiment on September 1, 1864 at Denver. Crawford served 4 months before being mustered out on December 31, 1864.
The 3rd Colorado Cavalry was organized at Denver between August 20 and September 21, 1864. The unit was designated for 100 days of service. It was assigned to duties against the Arapahoe and Cheyenne Indians in Colorado. The most notable engagement for the unit occurred on November 30, 1864 at Sand Creek in the Colorado Territory.
Crawford died on October 11, 1930 at the age of 88 years. He is buried in the Belgrade Cemetery in Belgrade (Nance County), Nebraska. Crawford was a member of the Live Eagle (#147) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Fullerton, Nebraska.
