Cox was born in Farmington (Fulton County), Illinois on March 23, 1845. He was residing in Chillicothe (Peoria County), Illinois when he enlisted in the regiment on February 1, 1864. He was mustered on April 23, 1864 and went on to serve 1 year and 5 months. He was discharged on September 30, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky.
Cox joined the regiment in the spring of 1864. The unit was assigned to duties in several southern states during the balance of his enlistment.
He died on October 7, 1930 at the age of 85 years. He is buried in the Sterling Cemetery in Sterling (Johnson County), Nebraska. Cox was a member of two posts of the Grand Army of the Republic:
Webb Post (#18) in Fairmont, Nebraska.
Sill Post (#99) in Sterling, Nebraska.
