Elder was born in Illinois on February 11, 1847. He was residing in Hillsboro (Montgomery County), Illinois when he enlisted as a 17-year old private on May 5, 1864. Elder was mustered on June 11, 1864 and served a little over 3 months. He was discharged on September 26, 1864 at Mattoon, Illinois.
The 143rd Illinois Infantry was organized and mustered at Mattoon for 100 days of service on June 11, 1864. The unit was assigned to duties in Tennessee and Arkansas and was mustered out on September 26, 1864.
Elder died on June 26, 1931 at the age of 84 years. He is buried in the Fairfield Cemetery in Fairfield (Clay County), Nebraska. Grand Army of the Republic records indicate that Elder was a member of three Nebraska (3) posts:
Oliver Post (#43) in Fairfield.
Collins Post (#117) in Glenvil.
Jordan Post (#239) in Clay Center.
