Farnham was born in Illinois on December 21, 1844. He was residing in Wataga (Knox County), Illinois when he enlisted in the regiment on May 13, 1864. Farnham was mustered on June 21, 1864. He served until October 14, 1864 when he was discharged at Springfield, Illinois.
The 138th Illinois Infantry was organized and mustered at Camp Wood (Quincy), Illinois on June 21, 1864. The regiment was sent to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and remained there until it was mustered out on October 14, 1864.
Farnham died on January 13, 1930 at the age of 85 years. He is buried in the Central City Cemetery in Central City (Merrick County), Nebraska.
