Farnham was born in Sanbornton (Belknap County), New Hampshire on July 8, 1847. The 14-year old enlisted as a drummer on September 16, 1861. He was mustered 2 days later and served 1 year. Farnham was discharged at Hilton Head, South Carolina on September 16, 1862.

Farnham died on January 22, 1932 at the age of 84 years. He is buried in the Woodland Cemetery in North Bend (Dodge County), Nebraska. Farnham was a member of the Sully Post (#105) of the Grand Army of the Republic in North Bend.
