Field was born in Conway (Franklin County), Massachusetts on November 15, 1843. He was residing in Conway when he enlisted in the regiment on September 8, 1862. Field was mustered on October 11, 1862 and served at 10 months. He was discharged on August 14, 1863 at Greenfield, Massachusetts.
The 52nd Massachusetts Infantry was organized at Greenfield, Massachusetts during October 1862. The unit was assigned to Louisiana and was part of the Siege of Port Hudson (LA) (May 30-July 9, 1863).
Field died on March 26, 1930 at the age of 86 years. He is buried in the Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln (Lancaster County), Nebraska. Field was a member of the Farragut Post (#25) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Lincoln.
