Frantz was born on March 31, 1845. He was residing in Eminence (Logan County), Illinois when he enlisted in the regiment on May 2, 1864. Frantz was mustered on June 9, 1864. He was discharged on September 23, 1864 at Camp Butler, Illinois.
The 145th Illinois Infantry was organized and mustered at Camp Butler for 100 days on June 9, 1864. The unit was ordered to St Louis and was assigned to duties in that area until it was mustered out in September 1864.
Frantz died on May 1, 1931 at the age of 86 years. He is buried in the Roseland Cemetery in Roseland (Adams County), Nebraska. Frantz was a member of the Geary Post (#81) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Juniata, Nebraska.
