Funk was born on April 20, 1839. He was residing in Harrison County, Indiana when he enlisted and was mustered in the regiment on August 22, 1861. The Sons of the Union Veterans website indicates that Funk was discharged on August 20, 1864. Funk’s first name is listed by Civil War sources as Larken, Larkin, and Lappen.

The 45th Indiana Infantry (consisting of 6 companies) was organized at Madison, Indiana on August 22, 1861. The unit was designated as the 3rd Indiana Cavalry on October 22, 1861 and assigned to the Army of the Potomac in the Eastern Theatre of the Civil War.

Funk died on February 13, 1931 at the age of 90 years. He is buried in the Minden Cemetery in Minden (Kearney County), Nebraska. Funk was a member of the Strong Post (#91) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Minden.
