Gardner was born in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania on January 20, 1845. He was residing in Gilman (Iroquois County), Illinois when he enlisted in the regiment on August 12, 1861. Gardner served about 7 months before being discharged on March 4, 1863 due to disability.

Gardner died on March 1, 1933 at the age of 88 years. He is buried in the Nelson Cemetery in Nelson (Nuckolls County), Nebraska. Gardner was a member of the Thomas Post (#15) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Nelson.
