Gilkison (also spelled Gilkinson) was born in Missouri on July 13, 1845. He enlisted and was mustered in the regiment on October 20, 1864 for 1 year. Gilkison was discharged on October 20, 1865.
The 43rd Missouri Infantry was organized at St Joseph, Missouri between August 22 and September 7, 1864. The regiment was assigned to operations against guerillas in central Missouri.
Gilkison died on May 25, 1930 at the age of 84 years. He is buried in the Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln (Lancaster County), Nebraska. Gilkison belonged to two posts of the Grand Army of the Republic:
Farragut Post (#25) in Lincoln.
Anderson Post (#32) in York.
