Halstead was born in Trumbull County, Ohio on November 2, 1846. The 18 year old enlisted and was mustered in the regiment on March 25, 1865. He served about 8 months before being discharged on December 3, 1865 at Victoria, Texas.
He joined the unit in the final stages of the Civil War. During his enlistment, the outfit was assigned to operations in East Tennessee until June 1865. It was reassigned to Texas and remained there until it was mustered out on December 3, 1865.
Halstead died on December 5, 1930 at the age of 84 years. He is buried in the Schuyler Cemetery in Schuyler (Colfax County), Nebraska.
