Lansing was born in Ireland on April 20, 1845. He was living in Mission (LaSalle County), Illinois when he enlisted and was mustered for 1 year on October 20, 1864. Illinois records indicate that Lansing was a substitute for another soldier at the time of his enlistment. He served about 11 months before being mustered out October 1, 1865 at New Orleans.
Lansing died on February 19, 1936 at the age of 90 years. He is buried in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Valentine (Cherry County), Nebraska. At the time of his death, he was the last member of the Wood Post (#208) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Valentine.
