Herpolsheimer (also spelled Herpulsheiner) was born in Prussia on November 28, 1843. He enlisted and mustered in the regiment on December 11, 1863. He served about 17 months and was discharged on December 20, 1863.

The 45th Indiana Infantry (consisting of 6 companies) was organized at Madison, Indiana on August 22, 1861. The unit was designated as the 3rd Indiana Cavalry on October 22, 1861 and assigned to the Army of the Potomac in the Eastern Theatre of the Civil War.

Herpolsheimer died on August 6, 1934 at the age of 90 years. He is buried in the Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln (Lancaster County), Nebraska.
