Horton was born in Indiana on January 27, 1836. He was residing in La Crosse (La Crosse County), Wisconsin when he enlisted and mustered in the 40th Wisconsin Infantry on May 11, 1864. Horton served about 4 months and was discharged on September 16, 1864 at Milwaukee. He re-enlisted and mustered in the Union Army on March 4, 1865 as a member of the 118th Illinois Infantry. He served 7 months and was discharged on October 1, 1865 at Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
The 40th Wisconsin Infantry was organized and mustered at Madison, Wisconsin on June 14, 1864. The unit was assigned to garrison, railroad guard, and picket duty in the Memphis, Tennessee area.
During Horton’s enlistment, the 118th Illinois Infantry was assigned to provost duty in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana area. The unit was discharged on October 13, 1865.
Horton died on April 17, 1932 at the age of 96 years. He is buried in the Lebanon Cemetery in Lebanon (Red Willow County), Nebraska.
