Johnson was born on December 14, 1848. Illinois He enlisted on November 5, 1863 at Mount Sterling, Illinois and was mustered on November 30, 1863. Based on his date of birth, he was 14 years old. Johnson served a little less than 2 years. He was discharged on October 10, 1865 at Fort Snelling, Minnesota.
Johnson joined the regiment is late 1863 or early 1864. The unit saw action in Tennessee at the Battles of Franklin and Nashville in November and December, 1864. In 1865 the regiment was part of an Indian expedition across Minnesota and the Dakota Territory.
Johnson died on July 17, 1938. He is buried in the Fullerton Cemetery in Fullerton (Nance County), Nebraska. Johnson was a member of the Live Eagle Post (#147) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Fullerton.
