Private Simeon Johnston

Company B, 14th Pennsylvania Cavalry

Johnston was born January 4, 1844. He enlisted and mustered in the regiment on November 23, 1862. Johnston served about 2 years and 6 months. He was discharged on May 28, 1865.

The 14th Pennsylvania Cavalry was organized at Pittsburg, Philadelphia, and Erie in October and November 1862. The unit was also called the 159th Regiment Volunteers. During Johston’s enlistment, the unit was assigned to General Sheridan’s Shenandoah Valley Campaign (VA) (August-November 1864). During that campaign, the regiment fought in several major battles. Some them include:

Battle of Winchester (VA) (September 19, 1864).

Battle of Fisher’s Hill (VA) (September 22, 1864).

Battle of Cedar Creek (VA) (October 19, 1865).

Johnston died on March 10, 1933 at the age of 89 years. He is buried in the Juniata Cemetery in Juanita (Adams County), Nebraska. Johnston was a member of the Geary Post (#81) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Juniata.
