Jones was born August 5, 1848. Indiana records indicate that he enlisted and mustered in the regiment on April 1, 1864. Based on his date of birth, he was 15 years at the time of his enlistment. Jones served about 19 months. He was discharged on November 10, 1865 at Indianapolis.
The 12th Indiana Cavalry was organized at Kendallville and Michigan City, Indiana between December 10, 1863 and April 28, 1864. The regiment spent most of the balance of the Civil War in Alabama. It was part of the Siege of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely between March 26 and April 9, 1865.
Jones died June 14, 1931 at the age of 82 years. He is buried in the Benkelman Cemetery in Benkelman (Dundy County), Nebraska. Jones was a member of the Edwards Post (#217) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Benkelman.
