Corporal William H Jones

Company E, 3rd Vermont Infantry

Jones was born in 1841. He was residing in Wolcott (Lamoille County), Vermont when he enlisted in the regiment on June 1, 1861. Jones was mustered on July 16, 1861 and served over 3 years. He was discharged on July 27, 1864.

The 3rd Vermont Infantry was organized and mustered at St Johnsbury on July 16, 1861. During his enlistment, the regiment was involved in many major battles. Some of them include:

Battle of Lee’s Mills (VA) (April 16, 1862). Regimental losses were 23 killed, 52 wounded, and 8 captured.

Battle of Savage’s Station (VA) (June 26, 1862). Regimental losses were 6 killed, 22 wounded, and 19 captured.

Battle of Antietam (VA) (September 16-17, 1862).

Battle of Fredricksburg (VA) (December 12-15, 1862).

Battle of Gettysburg (PA) (July 1-3, 1863).

Battle of the Wilderness (VA) (May 5-7, 1864). Regimental losses were 44 killed, 154 wounded, and 8 captured in 3 days of fighting.

Battle of Spottsylvania Court House (VA) (May 12-21, 1864). Jones was wounded on May 10, 1864 during this battle.

Jones died on November 7, 1941 at the age of 100 years. He is buried in the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery in Grand Island (Hall County), Nebraska.
