Lackey was born in Uxbridge, Massachusetts on April 3, 1846. He enlisted as an 18-year old private on July 9, 1864. Lackey was mustered on July 21, 1864 and served about 5 months. He was mustered out on November 11, 1864.
The 42nd Massachusetts Infantry was organized and mustered at Reedville, Massachusetts for 100 days of duty. It was mustered out on November 11, 1864.
Lackey died on November 6, 1937 at the age of 91 years. He is buried in the Stanton Cemetery in Stanton (Stanton County), Nebraska. At the time of his death, he was the last member of the Kendall Post (#190) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Stanton.
