Kavanaugh (also spelled Kavanagh) was born in Vermont on September 29, 1841. The 20 year old farmer enlisted in the regiment on November 1, 1861. He was mustered on November 11, 1861 and served an undetermined period of time. Illinois records do not include a discharge date for Kavanaugh. One source indicate that he was Absent Without Leave (AWOL) when he left the regiment.
He died on November 13, 1933 at the age of 92 years. He is buried in the St Andrew’s Cemetery in Tecumseh (Johnson County), Nebraska. Kavanaugh was a member of the Heckathorn Post (#47) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Tecumseh.
