Keithley was born in Blandinsville (McDonough County), Illinois on December 26, 1845. He was residing in Blendinsville when he enlisted in the regiment on July 30, 1862. He was mustered on September 1, 1862. Keithley served about 33 months before being discharged on June 7, 1865 at Washington DC.
The 78th Illinois Infantry was organized and mustered at Quincy, Illinois on September 1, 1862. During his service, the regiment was involved in many major battles and campaigns. Some of them include:
Battle of Chickamauga (GA) (September 19-20, 1863). Regimental losses were 20 killed, 7 wounded, and 4 captured or reported missing.
Battle of Mission Ridge (TN) (November 24-25, 1863).
Atlanta (GA) Campaign (May 1-September 8, 1864).
Battle of Resaca (GA) (May 14-15, 1864).
Battle of Peach Tree Creek (GA) (July 19-20, 1864).
Battle of Jonesboro (GA) (August 31-September 1, 1864). Regimental losses were 14 killed and 10 wounded.
General Sherman’s March to the Sea (GA) (November 15-December 10, 1864).
Siege of Savannah (GA) (December 10-21, 1864).
Campaign of the Carolinas (January-April 1865).
At the Bennett House (Raleigh NC) when General Johnston surrendered the Army of Tennessee (April 26, 1865).
Grand Review of the Troops (Washington DC) (May 24, 1865).
Keithley died on April 29, 1930 at the age of 84 years. He is buried in the Grand Island Cemetery in Grand Island (Hall County), Nebraska.
