Private Joseph McKain

Company B, 123rd Pennsylvania Infantry

McKain was born on March 5, 1841. He was residing in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania when he enlisted and mustered in the regiment on August 7, 1862. McKain served about 9 months before his discharge at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on May 13, 1863.

The 123rd Pennsylvania Infantry was organized at Allegheny City, Pennsylvania in August of 1862. The regiment was assigned to the Army of the Potomac. During his enlistment, the unit was involved in two major battles:

Battle of Fredericksburg (VA) (December 12-15, 1862). Regimental losses were 17 killed, 37 wounded, 3 were captured, and 12 reported missing.

Battle of Chancellorsville (VA) (May 1-5, 1863).

McKain died on February 24, 1932 at the age of 90 years. He is buried in the Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln (Lancaster County), Nebraska.
