Mitchell was born in Hamilton County, Ohio on November 25, 1844. He was living in Plattsmouth (Cass County) when he enlisted as an 18-year old private into Company H of the 2nd Nebraska Cavalry. Mitchell enlisted on November 4, 1862 and was mustered on December 13, 1862. He served about 1 year and was discharged on December 23, 1863.
Mitchell re-enlisted into the military on February 19, 1864 as a member of Company A of the 1st Nebraska Cavalry. He was promoted to corporal on March 1, 1866 and was mustered out of the regiment on July 1, 1866.
Mitchell died on February 26, 1931 at the age of 87 years. He was a carpenter and is buried in Section K (row 4) of the Oak Hill Cemetery in Plattsmouth. He was a member of the McConihie Post (#45 of the Grand Army of the Republic in Plattsmouth.
