Merrill was born in Ohio on November 19, 1843. He enlisted as a corporal on May 2, 1864. Merrill was mustered on May 13, 1864 and served 4 months. He was discharged on September 22, 1864 at Toledo, Ohio.
The 130th Ohio Infantry was organized and mustered at Sandusky, Ohio on May 13, 1864. The unit was sent to the Washington DC area and performed guard duty. The regiment was mustered out on September 22, 1864.
Merrill died on January 7, 1932 at the age of 88 years. He is buried in the Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln (Lancaster County), Nebraska. Merrill was a member of the Meade Post (#19) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Sutton, Nebraska.
