Merrill was born in Mount Sterling (Madison County), Ohio on August 12, 1844. He was residing in Clinton (Dewitt County), Illinois when he enlisted and mustered in the regiment on August 7, 1861. Merrill served a little over 3 years before he was discharged on August 20, 1864.
The 41st Illinois Infantry was organized and mustered at Decatur, Illinois on August 5, 1861. During Merrill’s enlistment, the regiment was involved in several major battles and military operations. Some of them include:
Capture of Fort Donelson (TN) (February 12-16, 1862). Regimental losses were 13 killed and 8 wounded on February 15, 1862.
Battle of Shiloh (TN) (April 6-7, 1862). Regimental losses were 23 killed, 7 wounded, and 1 captured on April 6, 1862.
Siege of Vicksburg (MS) (June 22-July 4, 1863).
Siege of Jackson (MS) (July 10-17, 1863). Regimental losses were 19 killed and 7 wounded on July 12, 1863.
Merrill died on November 25, 1931 at the age of 87 years. He is buried in the Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Chadon (Dawes County), Nebraska.
