McFarland was born in Pennsylvania on July 1, 1848. He was residing in Ringgold County, Iowa when he enlisted in the regiment on May 21, 1864. McFarland was mustered on June 10, 1864 and served about 100 days. He was discharged on September 23, 1864 at Davenport, Iowa. Based on his date of birth, he was 15 years old when he was mustered.
The 46th Iowa Infantry was organized at Davenport on June 10, 1864. The unit was sent to Tennessee and assigned to guard duty on the Memphis & Charleston Railroad until September 1864.
McFarland died on February 8, 1932 at the age of 83 years. He is buried in the Rosehill Cemetery in Creighton (Knox County), Nebraska. McFarland was a member of the Irwin Post (#70) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Creighton.
