Private Samuel S McCabe

Company A, 79th Ohio Infantry

McCabe was born on March 17, 1841. He enlisted in the regiment on July 22, 1862 and was mustered on August 23, 1862. McCabe served about 33 months before he was discharged on June 9, 1865.

The 79th Ohio Infantry was organized at Indianapolis between August 20 and September 2, 1862. During McCabe’s enlistment, the regiment was involved in several major battles and campaigns. Some of them include:

Battle of Stone’s River (TN) (December 30-31, 1862 – January 1-3, 1863).

Battle of Chickamauga (GA) (September 19-20, 1863).

Atlanta (GA) Campaign (May 1-September 8, 1864).

Battle of Resaca (GA) (May 14-15, 1864). Regimental losses for 2 days were 8 killed, 42 wounded, and 1 taken prisoner.

Assault on Kenesaw (GA) (June 27, 1864).

Battle of Peach Tree Creek (GA) (July 19-20, 1864). Regimental losses were 10 killed and 29 wounded.

Siege of Atlanta (GA) (July 22-August 25, 1864).

Battle of Jonesboro (GA) (August 31-September 1, 1864).

Nashville (TN) Campaign (November-December 1864).

Battle of Franklin (TN) (November 30, 1864).

Battle of Nashville (TN) (December 15-16, 1864).

McCabe died on July 28, 1935 at the age of 94 years. He is buried in the Blue Mound Cemetery in Milford (Seward County), Nebraska.
