Veteran Reserve Corps (VRC)
Macumber was born in Shelby County, Indiana on February 24, 1844. He was residing in Jerseyville (Jersey County), Illinois when he enlisted and mustered in the regiment on September 4, 1861. Macumber served about 2 years and 1 month before transferring to the Veteran Reserve Corps (VRC) on October 16, 1863. His discharge date from the VRC was not available.
The VRC was organized for soldiers that had been wounded, injured, or were suffering from disease. They were assigned to light duties which freed up able-soldiers for front-line duties.
Macumber died on October 15, 1938 at the age of 94 years. He is buried in the Fairview Cemetery in Rushville (Sheridan County), Nebraska.
