Marvel was born in Waynesville (DeWitt County), Illinois on August 31, 1841. He was residing in Logan County, Illinois when he enlisted and mustered in the regiment on March 12, 1862. Marvel re-enlisted on March 14, 1864 and served 3 years and 8 months. He was discharged on November 22, 1865 at San Antonio, Texas.
The 2nd Illinois Cavalry was organized and mustered at Camp Butler, Illinois on August 12, 1861. During Marvel’s enlistment, the unit was involved in several major battles and campaigns. Some of them include:
Battle of Shiloh (TN) (April 6-7, 1862).
Battle of Champion’s Hill (LA) (May 16, 1863).
Siege of Vicksburg (MS) (May 18-July 4, 1863).
Operations against Fort Blakely (AL) (April 1-9, 1865).
Marvel died on February 8, 1931 at the age of 89 years. He is buried in the Phillips Cemetery in Phillips (Hamilton County), Nebraska. Marvel was a member of the Baldwin Post (#167) of the Grand Army of the Republic in St Joe, Nebraska.
