Michael was born in 1841. An exact date of birth was not available. He enlisted and mustered into the regiment on September 4, 1861. Michael served nearly 4 years before he was discharged on August 4, 1865. He enlisted as a private and was promoted to saddler during his tour of duty.

The 45th Indiana Infantry (consisting of 6 companies) was organized at Madison, Indiana on August 22, 1861. The unit was designated as the 3rd Indiana Cavalry on October 22, 1861 and assigned to the Army of the Potomac in the Eastern Theatre of the Civil War.

Michael died on January 1, 1937. He is buried in the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Omaha (Douglas County), Nebraska. Michael was a member of the Custer Post (#7) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Omaha.
