Private Franklin McCauley
Company D, 17th Illinois Cavalry
McCauley (also spelled McCawley) was born in LaSalle County, Illinois on October 4, 1843. He was residing in Pontiac (Livingston County), Illinois when he enlisted and mustered in the regiment on December 26, 1863. McCauley served about 2 years before he was discharged on December 20, 1865.
The 17th Illinois Cavalry was organized and mustered in St Charles, Illinois in January and February 1864. Company D was assigned to St Louis and performed escort and provost duties. In June 1865 it was sent to Kansas and remained there until December when it was mustered out.
McCauley died on May 7, 1936 at the age of 92 years. He is buried in the Edgar Cemetery in Edgar (Clay County), Nebraska.
