Pate was born in Indiana on October 25, 1845. He was residing in Farmer’s Retreat (Dearborn County), Indiana when he enlisted and mustered in the regiment on September 13, 1864. Pate served a little over 9 months before his discharge on June 28, 1865.
The 142nd Indiana Infantry was organized and mustered at Indianapolis on November 3, 1864. It was assigned to post duty in Tennessee until it was mustered out on July 14, 1865. The regiment fought at the Battle of Nashville on December 15-16, 1864.
Pate died on September 30, 1931 at the age of 85 years. He is buried in the Minden Cemetery in Minden (Kearney County), Nebraska. Pate was a member of the Strickland Post (#13) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Hastings, Nebraska.
