Post was born in Cincinnati (Hamilton County), Ohio on March 8, 1847. The 15 year old was residing in Deerfield (Randolph County), Indiana when he enlisted and mustered in the regiment on August 16, 1862. Post served about 34 months before he was discharged on June 14, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee.
The 84th Indiana Infantry was organized at Richmond and Indianapolis on September 3, 1862. During his enlistment, the regiment was involved in several major battles and campaigns. Some of them include:
Battle of Chickamauga (GA) (September 19-20, 1863). Regimental losses were 23 killed and 3 wounded in 2 days of fighting.
Atlanta (GA) Campaign (May 1-September 8, 1864).
Battle of Resaca (GA) (May 14-15, 1864).
Battle of Peach Tree Creek (GA) (July 19-20, 1864).
Siege of Atlanta (GA) (July 22-August 25, 1864).
Battle of Franklin (TN) (November 30, 1864).
Battle of Nashville (TN) (December 15-16, 1864).
Post died on March 5, 1931 at the age of 83 years. He is buried in the Alford Cemetery in Monowi (Boyd County), Nebraska. Post was a member of the Lander Post (#125) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Niobrara, Nebraska.
