Private Ira Goodsell

Goodsell was born in Chiullicothe (Peoria County), Illinois on December 8, 1840. He was living in Cahokia (St Clair County), Illinois when he enlisted in the regiment on February 20, 1865. The 24-year old farmer served about 8 months before being mustered out October 10, 1865 at Springfield, Illinois.
The 3rd Illinois Consolidated Cavalry was organized on August 24, 1864. The unit saw action in Tennessee at the Battles of Franklin and Nashville in November and December, 1864. In 1865 the regiment was part of an Indian expedition across Minnesota and the Dakota Territory.
Goodsell died on July 16, 1931 at the age of 90 years. He is buried in the Craig Cemetery in Craig (Burt County), Nebraska. At the time of his death, he was the last member of the Davis Post (#292) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Craig.
