First Sergeant Henry D Radley

Radley was born in Illinois on January 30, 1841. He was residing in Jacksonville (Morgan County), Illinois when he enlisted in the regiment on October 15, 1861. Radley was mustered on December 31, 1861 and served about 3 ½ years. He re-enlisted on February 29, 1864 and was discharged on July 14, 1865 at Chicago. Radley was promoted to first sergeant during his tour of duty.
The 2nd Illinois Light Artillery was organized and mustered at Peoria on May 23, 1861. During Radley’s enlistment, the unit was involved in several major battles and campaigns. Some of them include:
Battle of Pea Ridge (AK) (March 6-8, 1862).
Battle of Champion’s Hill (MS) (May 16, 1863).
Siege of Vicksburg (MS) (May 18-July 4, 1863).
Siege of Jackson (MS) (July 10-17, 1863).
Radley died on October 26, 1933 at the age of 92 years. He is buried in the Ox Bow Cemetery in Nelson (Nuckolls County), Nebraska.
