Company K, 156th Illinois Infantry

Whaley was born in Windsor (Eaton County), Illinois on March 10, 1850. He enlisted and was mustered in the regiment on February 11, 1865. Based on his date of birth and enlistment date, Whaley was 14 years old when he entered the military. Whaley served about 7 months before being mustered out on September 20, 1865 at Memphis, Tennessee.

The 156th Illinois Infantry was organized on February 16, 1865. The unit was sent to Tennessee and performed guard duty on railroads.

Whaley died on July 8, 1935 at the age of 85 years. He is buried in the Sand Valley Cemetery in Callaway (Custer County), Nebraska. He was a member of the Hayes Post (#264) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Callaway.
