Roberts was born in Ohio on October 14, 1841. Initially, Roberts enlisted and mustered in the 86th Ohio Infantry on June 10, 1862. He served a little over 3 months before he was discharged on September 25, 1862 at Camp Chase, Ohio. The unit was assigned to West Virginia where is performed garrison duty, constructing fortifications, and guarding stores.
He re-entered the Union Army as a member of Company K of the 1st Ohio Cavalry. He enlisted and mustered on February on February 26, 1864. Roberts served a little less than 19 months with his 2nd unit. During his enlistment the regiment was assigned to the Atlanta (GA) Campaign (May 1-September 8, 1864) and the Siege of Atlanta (GA) (July 24-August 15, 1864). Roberts was promoted to sergeant on November 1, 1864.
Roberts died on April 9, 1937 at the age of 95 years. He is buried in the Tecumseh Cemetery in Tecumseh (Johnson County), Nebraska. Roberts was a member of the Heckathorn Post (#47) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Tecumseh.
