Schell was born in Germany on September 28, 1846. He was residing in Oquawka (Henderson County), Illinois when he enlisted in the regiment on May 10, 1864. Schell was mustered on June 21, 1864. He served to October 14, 1864 when he was discharged at Camp Butler (Springfield), Illinois.
The 138th Illinois Infantry was organized at Camp Wood, Illinois on June 21, 1864 for 100 days of service. The regiment was sent to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and remained there until October 1864.
Schell died on July 7, 1931 at the age of 84 years. He is buried in the Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln (Lancaster County), Nebraska. Schell was a member of the Farragut Post (#25) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Lincoln.
